I have just sent an email to my friend Carlos Villar, who will be ordained tomorrow a deacon by the Prelate of Opus Dei, Monsignor Javier Echevarria. The ordination will take place at the Basilica of St. Eugene in Rome. He will be among 37 other professionals who will be called to the clerical state. Carlos is quite a character and if becoming a priest was merely a human choice, I dare say it would have been preposterous to imagine Carlos as one. He is a rascal, he is never serious, he is funny, he is great! But a priest … Actually when the news came that he would be so ordained one day, I told him that I could not believe it. Not because it was impossible, but simply because… well… Carlos?

Voters Registration as a trip to hell!
January 29th, 2007 — Uncategorized
For at least two months now, I have been trying to register to be able to vote come April 2007. I understood (rightly or wrongly) that you have to register close to where you live because that is the place where you would have to vote. I understood that being a no-movement day, you would be restricted to voting where you registered and no where else. That is reason I ignored the many voter registration centres I found that were not near my house. The problem was that I could not locate any close to my house.

Death!
November 24th, 2006 — Uncategorized
It would seem that there is nothing new that can be said about death. November is about to end, the month when Catholics recall the Faithful Departed and pray for the repose of their souls. I have had many opportunities this month to consider death, and especially my own death. It’s thought keep bringing fear (which should not be for a child of God), especially because of the many “unknowns” associated with it. What is there after the life? How will I realize that I have died? Will I realize? As if to make it more intense, a good number of deaths have taken place around me: acquaintances, friends of friends, relatives, etc. Death still has a sting, but it is a sting that pierces only those who have no hope. I pray that God gives me the hope that a Christian should have, so that I no longer fear death. One of the other reasons I may have for often fearing death is because I am not making the most of my time, to please God. It is because I daily have reasons to be sorry for the things I have not done well, or the things I have omitted. That is why in the presence of God I once again renew the desire to do good, make the most of my time, put my talents to utmost use and seek to please God, so that Jesus will not be for me a judge … He will simply be Jesus. I wish!
Nigeria is a curious mix-bag
November 22nd, 2006 — Uncategorized
When many African countries were calling for debt pardon, not many in the international community were sympathetic to including Nigeria among the beneficiaries. Among the reasons stated was that Nigeria is not really a poor country, judging from the millions of dollars looted by its past leaders and stashed in foreign banks. They forget too quickly that stolen wealth does not necessarily translate to benefit for the common man in the country. Nigeria is poor, and many of its people live in abject poverty. However, there are also many wealthy Nigerians and I dare so, a good number of them with wealth from dubious sources. Wealth is worshipped here, with no questions asked as to the source of the money.

The “raw materials” for my blog
November 21st, 2006 — Uncategorized
If you are curious about the software powering this blog, here goes: The blogging software is Wordpress (www.wordpress.org). I am using a customized theme called “Kiwi” which was designed by Yas and Karsten of no.oneslistening.com and in addition the design was made easy by a second theme also by Yas and Karsten called “Canvas”. I am hosting my site with bluehost.com. Although I have no affiliation with the company I am happy to promote them because they are made of gentlemen and ladies who put the customer first. The CEO is Matt Heaton who has a personal blog at mattheaton.com where he communicates with his clients about business and other things. Seeing that there are many web hosts out there, it helps to have recommendations, so If you are ever in doubt, give them a try. Another guy that used to make me as happy as bluehost was jv-hosting.net. I left jv after about 3 years but it was as well as good host. With the Bluehost package, you are able to host 5 other domains and can create up to 20 sub domains. Disk size: 50GB; Bandwidth: 999GB. How about that! Hey bluehost, shouldn’t you be paying me for this free ad?
